Sub. The Friends of the tribals’ in Jhabua Madhya Pradesh

Respected Sir,

Jan Shikshan Sansthan (http://jssjhabua.net/) has been working in Jhabua for number of years. JSS is a Human Resource Development [HRD] project and is registered with the Firms and Society, Department of State Government.

Jhabua is a remote tribal district in MP with only about 37% literacy. The villages of this vast arid region are widely scattered and most of them are hard to reach. The inhabitants of Jhabua also called the “forest people” belong to the Bhil tribe which has many sub castes. 59% of the tribes in Jhabua are below poverty line. Their main occupation is agriculture and cattle rearing, but because of the development of roads in the area, the agriculture and cattle rearing areas have reduced. There is seasonal agriculture in the region and in the summer months because of the lack of water, families migrate to the neighboring state of Gujarat. This seasonal migration has caused the incidence of HIV to increase in the area. The government has initiated many poverty elimination schemes for the area, but the tribes have not been forthcoming because of lack of awareness and education.

In 1996 Indian Space Research Organization [ISRO] started a pilot project Jhabua Development Communication Project [JDCP] with an aim to work towards definition of Satellite based Communication System to meet the requirement of rural areas. After 2000, the project was handed over to MP State Government. The broadcast is managed by government bodies in Bhopal, but the maintenance of the equipment in the villages of Jhabua has been neglected.

In December 2008, ISRO officials surveyed about 100 villages in 6 blocks of Jhabua to write a status report on the present condition of the equipment. This was as per the orders of the Prime Minister, Mr Manmohan Singh and was implemented with the cooperation of the State Govt. Collector of Jhabua, Mr Jagdish Sharma and his district team. The ISRO officials recorded visual evidence of the damage in their field visit and have given an estimate of Rs.69.35 lakhs to replace the old equipment with the new ones.

This letter is to request you to help in the development of the tribals in the district by writing to the Prime Minister or to anyone you know who can help, any foundation or individual who can give us Television sets, The ISRO will give us direct telecast for 2 hours, free of coast. to re-start the Jhabua Development Communication Project. JSS Jhabua will provide the manpower to support the maintenance and sustainability of the project once it is reinstated in the field.

This will be a much needed opportunity for the tribals to finally face development.

Your’s Sincerely,

(Mrs. Indira Iyengar )
